August 4 - August 10

This week we officially started back to school for the 2025-2026 school year!!

Meghan was especially excited to be diving into the middle ages this year in history. It's been one of her favorite time periods to read about in the past and now she gets to study it as a part of school!

Katie is learning cursive this year using grooved handwriting books to help her hands (which lack the bone and muscle development expected at her age) to form the letters correctly while learning.

Her new art curriculum asked Meghan to try drawing with just her mouth - needless to say, it didn't go well and she has a new appreciation for the skills of Joni Erikson Tada.

Fourth grade has brought a step up in the amount of reading expected of Katie each day. And she has happily risen to the challenge. She also made a lapbook this week about major types of geographical land forms - lapbooking is her happy place, which is good, because we have a lot planned for this school year.

We are trying a new spelling program this year that teaches spelling words by sound rule and is on the computer. So far, so good.

Katie worked on cross stitch during her handwork time and much of her free time and completed this cat keychain. She has several other cat and dog cross stitch kits and is already busy working away on her next one.

Logic games - Katie decided to start the year with Cat Crimes and trying to decide who is responsible for causing the mayhem in the house.

First science experiment of the year - Meghan planted cat grasses in a terrarium in her room as a part of botany. To say she was excited by this project would be a complete understatement.

All-in-all, we had a great first week back to lessons. Not all parts of all subjects were loaded into the days yet, but what we did worked well and the girls did great!

July 28 - August 3, 2025

Meghan enjoyed some time working on her clay while we listening to an audio book.

Last week of summer shenanigans: we dyed the girls' hair. They were inspired by the bright colors, wrote a story, and then posed for the pictures for the book!

Katie started prealgebra (and is doing well!).

We watched Nim's Island and drank icy tropical drinks after finishing the book together.

Cuties working on lessons in their rooms.

Katie finished her first (of many) geography lapbook of the year!

Cole needed to poke around in the attic this morning, so the girls were welcome to join him. Meghan enjoyed going up and in and helping Dad. Katie enjoyed poking her head in.

Meghan and Cole started work on her Hack Pack today - they built an IR Turret and had fun together!

Vacation to Houston

We went to Houston for a family member's celebration of life. While we were an hour from the ocean, we decided to take the girls (along with their cousins) to the beach! We went to Galveston beach for a morning of beach and ocean play followed by a ferry ride. While on the ferry we saw all sorts of water fowl and tons of dolphins!!

The next day, we went to the Houston Arboretum and Discovery Center. It was fun to compare the flora and fauna of Texas to our arboretum in Kansas. The kids also enjoyed the animals and curiosities in the Discovery Center.
