We traveled to Atchison, the birthplace of Amelia Earhart. On the drive up we listened to Angela O'Dell's Real Cool History for Kids podcast about Amelia Earhart. After our day, we put many books on reserve at the library because these girls are hungry for more!
First we visited the Hangar Museum where we saw the last remaining plane from the series of planes that Amelia flew when she disappeared. The museum was FABULOUS at teaching about Amelia Earhart - her life and story, her STEM interests, and the mystery that surrounds her life, the Aeronautics industry, and women in STEM.
We then toured Amelia Earhart's childhood home. We saw the room where she was born, the room she grew up in, read stories about her childhood, her homeschooling (!), the girls were inspired by her love of nature and literature, and all around had a wonderful time.
As the Mama of two girls who God has most definitely gifted with abilities in science and math, this was a wonderful trip, well worth the drive, to inspire and excite them by the story of another woman (and other women) who did great things in science because they were curious and kept exploring. We had a truly wonderful day exploring!
